Discovering the Joy in the Journey by Debbie Herrington-Mitchell is a non-fiction inspirational book about how cancer impacted Debbie Herrington-Mitchell’s life. This is a book that would appeal most to a mixed audience of mature young adults and adults who have or have had cancer, know someone who has cancer, or lost someone to cancer. Debbie Herrington-Mitchell begins with how cancer affected her childhood in that it took the life of her young mother. She spent her whole life praying that she would never have to experience cancer for herself, only to find out that she had stage four colon cancer.

This is a well written book that acts as an inspiration to those with cancer as it shows that cancer can be beaten and that good things can come from it as well. I admired how Debbie was able to overcome any anger or hatred towards God; I also liked her idea that the cancer was a challenge for her to overcome and that it would help her to grow as a person. I personally felt like I understood Debbie’s feelings because, while I have never had cancer, I did have to have major back surgery and I felt like there were some parallels between her story and my experiences. Overall, after I finished reading the book I felt a deep sense of admiration for Debbie, not just for beating cancer, but for her ability to see the positive angle even when in such a horrible situation!
