In Nola Z's Divide by Shunya, after senior product manager Maya is fired from a Seattle technology company, every digital record of her employment disappears. She soon learns that Project Kala, the mental wellness platform she helped build, has been transformed into a system that identifies people in severe distress so predatory lenders can reach them. Daniel, her live-in partner who directs Kala, has hidden surveillance equipment inside their apartment while arranging the corporate purge. The platform will launch nationwide in twenty-seven days. Maya turns to her friend Leela, whose knowledge of Vedic astrology helps her recognize the pattern surrounding Daniel's betrayal. Working beneath his surveillance, Maya searches for the concealed servers holding Kala's source code, knowing that one wrong move could expose her before she can stop the planned launch.

Nola Z's Divide by Shunya is a unique, fast-paced thriller with an exceptional premise. The author does a great job of making Maya a protagonist we want to root for. She has tactical intelligence and resolve that's amazing. Vedic astrology is totally new to me, and, in addition to Leela just being an all-around brilliant character, her being an astrologer makes her the most fascinating to me. Daniel, on the other hand, is an absolute snake and a seriously convincing antagonist. He's a solid contender for the worst partner ever, ordering Maya's digital erasure and tracing her, but the pièce de résistance is a lending funnel from a suicide prevention line. If Hannibal Lecter was a finance guy, he'd be Daniel. Seattle is almost a character in its own right, and the narrative breathes life into the city through settings from a mold-stained apartment where a surveillance device blinks to the underbelly of Pike Place Market where a rebar-sealed spice shop blocks radio signals. Readers who enjoy technological thrillers shaped by Vedic astrology are in for a treat.
