You’ll be surprised in the second chapter to find out that the first-person dialog is being narrated by a hand truck named Dolly! Dolly is very observant and has learned so much from hanging out with the family and watching television. Dolly Becomes a Scout is an easy to read book that explores the life of a hand truck and how helpful they are. She also describes her life with her adopted family. It’s a very imaginative story of how the mother uses the hand truck for chores or Hope, the young three-year-old, likes to dress Dolly up and pretend she’s a mommy. One day, they take Dolly the hand truck to a Scouts’ meeting. When the janitor picks Dolly up off the floor, he puts her in the janitor’s closet and turns out the light. Will the family find Dolly? Will Dolly get out of the janitor’s closet? Join the adventures with Dolly the hand truck. Author Kay Whitehouse is an imaginative storyteller who brings a hand truck to life.
The gray scale images by illustrator Mark Wayne Adams are very well done and realistic looking. The eyes and smiles on Dolly and Bear, the dog, are adorable and friendly. Children and parents will like the crossword puzzle, word search, fill-in-the-blanks, and a word scramble to reinforce the words used in the book and add entertainment. Dolly Becomes a Scout is a wonderful story divided into short chapters with activities, too. Adopted by a family, Dolly gets to attend family functions, take part in mischievous adventures and tea parties, and even a scary mix-up.
