“Donnie” by Michael Krause gives us a front-row seat as we witness the rise and fall of a well-known actor, from elementary school through his very public downfall. Picked on by the school bullies, he took a self-defense course, and when next a bully pulled a knife on him, he broke the guy’s wrist, kneed him in the groin, and suggested the guy not pick on him anymore. As a freshman in high school he developed a crush on a beautiful, long-legged blue-eyed blond senior, knowing he didn’t stand a chance with her. Or did he? In college he got a job tending bar in the sleazy part of town, until his first big break came after reading for a part in a movie. His subsequent rise to fame and fortune was legendary. So why did it all come crashing down? Why did his wife leave and take the kids? What happened to this universally adored actor that would lead him into depression and alcoholism?
“Donnie” is a very real look at what could almost be called “Every Man’s Story”, as he suffered many of the same trials and tribulations each of us have. I found myself rooting for him during his casting calls, hoping he could find something to get him away from the miserable bar where he worked. I rejoiced as he re-connected with his high school crush. I felt his apprehension when approached by the bullies. I was appalled at the conspiracy to bring him down, and I was shocked but happy for him at the unexpected ending. This story is well-written and very entertaining. I’d recommend it as a quick but uplifting read for anybody. It is a story I believe just about everybody can relate to.
