Dry Bones Calling by Sherri Kukla is a Christian fiction novel that blends mystery, suspense, and romance and is the second novel in the Dry Brook series. Deputy Griffin Black returns from vacation to a gruesome discovery in his small desert town: five decomposed bodies and a sixth person barely alive, buried alongside them. As Griffin embarks on his first major investigation as a homicide detective, he uncovers shocking truths that will profoundly affect the lives of those he cares about. The author brings faith and suspense together for a unique balance of mystery storytelling, creating a narrative that is both engaging and spiritually enriching for its Christian fanbase. But you don’t have to be a Christian to enjoy the work as the story itself is also a fantastic mystery tale that’s highly accessible, with strong pacing that lays out suspenseful clues and gets readers more and more involved in the plot.
Author Sherri Kukla's ability to develop complex characters is also to be celebrated, and the central detective, Griffin, is a really enjoyable hero in the tale who learns a lot. The narrative is detailed to convey every moment of Griffin’s confusion and turmoil when there’s death everywhere and seemingly no clues to be found. His dialogue exchanges with other characters give us a lot about his personality as well as interesting new clues to piece together with him. You never feel left behind in the story and the faith elements are explained well and woven into the mystery with plenty of context and exciting action scenes. Overall, Dry Bones Calling is a compelling and thought-provoking read that I would recommend to fans of intricate mysteries and those looking for a series to really get totally immersed in.
