In Eastern Shadows by Peter Nordgren, nineteen-year-old Ploy Soikham buys a one-way ticket to Thailand, the country of her birth. Ploy posts videos on social media, insisting that she is safe and that no one should come looking for her. But when Ploy fails to return, her mother, Sumali, grows suspicious. Convinced that the videos are staged, and with little help from the police, Sumali turns to Shane Morris, a struggling journalist with past ties to Thailand, to search for her daughter. Shane’s investigation pulls him deep into Thailand’s dangerous underworld, where he crosses paths with Kittisak Wanchai, one of the country’s wealthiest and most influential businessmen. Seen by many as a golden boy, Kittisak has criminal connections and hides a dark secret. As Shane digs deeper, he finds himself racing against time to uncover the truth and save Ploy before it is too late.

Eastern Shadows by Peter Nordgren had me hooked from the very first page. The story was a roller coaster of corruption, loyalty, betrayal, and the struggle to survive. The action was sharp and intense, always enhancing the plot rather than overshadowing it. The pacing struck a perfect balance, fast and exhilarating, yet carefully layered with a suspenseful buildup. Each chapter pulled me deeper in, and I often read far longer than intended because I could not put the book down. The characters were vivid and believable, each with their own flaws, motives, and depth, which made them feel genuine. The writing style was smooth and engaging, weaving in unexpected twists and turns that constantly surprised me. This book was both exciting and meaningful, keeping me fully invested from the start to the last page.
