Elsie the Elephant’s Stuffy Nose by Dr. Emily Joy Watters and Judy Sheer Watters tells the story of Dr. Emmy, a brave physician who receives a call asking for her help in Kenya. She knows she must try, so with her trusty medical bag and a big heart, she sets out on her journey. Along the way, she meets giraffes, baboons, and even local children, who thoughtfully point her in the right direction. Finally, she finds the gentle giant she came to see—Elsie the elephant, who has a very stuffy nose. Will Dr. Emmy be able to help her new friend? This charming tale blends adventure, friendship, and compassion, reminding readers that, as Aesop once said, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.”
Elsie the Elephant’s Stuffy Nose, by Dr. Emily Joy Watters and Judy Sheer Watters, is delightfully uplifting, playful, and educational all at the same time. As an educator, I appreciate how the authors have incorporated new vocabulary, geography, and animal facts from a culture with which many students may not be familiar. Plus, kids always seem to love characters from the wild, and I’m sure they will find Elsie the elephant and all the other creatures both relatable and funny. The vivid illustrations bring Kenya to life. This book is likely to spark curiosity and discussions about Africa, the wildlife that lives there, and what it means to be kind and caring. This book is an engaging read that belongs in both classroom and home libraries.
