Andry Chang’s Everna Saga: Maven, A Sparrow in the Storm is a romance fantasy. A cleric, Nigel DiMessina, encounters the Viperwolves gang attacking a carriage on the road. When he injures Calhoun Cavender, the gang flees the scene. Nigel finds Maven, a baby elf, and takes her to the monastery. As she grows up, Maven is not accepted by the other children, with one exception. DeClan, an older orphan, treats her like a younger sister. One afternoon, Lady DeSalle arrives and adopts Maven, whose life degenerates as the wife of Calhoun Cavender had adopted her. Riding in a carriage through town, Maven locks eyes with Reyl, a traveling merchant. One night Maven is injured and is rescued by Reyl. She falls in love with him, but does Reyl share the same feelings?

Andry Chang has written a fantasy story with unrequited love and magic infused throughout. It was easy to pity Maven as her life had been difficult until she met Reyl. The suspense held me spellbound. I thought Reyl and Maven would arrive at Reyl's home and become an official couple. I was shocked by the direction the story took. The story spans Maven’s life from childhood to becoming an adult, yet it was easy to follow the timeline. This is more than a fantasy romance novel. Paranormal elements, monsters, and a ruthless gang are entwined in the plot and the battle scenes are described in vivid detail. The conclusion was unpredictable. I would recommend Everna Saga: Maven to fantasy readers who enjoy an action-filled story that depicts the personal growth of a heroine.
