Extreme Malice by J. T. Tierney dives into the chaos and uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on our attitudes and civil society in general. Amy Wilson is a member of the Mesa County School Board. Her stance on masking and Covid vaccinations for the local children conflicts with a loud and disruptive group of protestors who see any form of mandatory action as an infringement not only of their freedoms but also their rights to parent their children as they see fit. As confrontations, vandalism, and physical attacks against Amy and her family escalate, she must seriously consider whether her principles and her desire to serve the community are important enough to risk the safety of those she loves.
Extreme Malice uses the pandemic as the central theme. Author J. T. Tierney highlights the extreme polarization that had been quietly happening in society over the past few decades, brought to the forefront by first the 2016 election of Donald Trump as president and then the subsequent Covid-19 pandemic that hit in early 2020. The book accurately portrays the incredible number of false narratives, lies, and conspiracy theories, especially on social media platforms at the time. I appreciated seeing how the normally calm but thin veneer of civilized society was so easily broken as the political environment allowed people to suddenly openly express their innermost and previously concealed prejudices and ignorance. The literary technique of relating the events from multiple perspectives was sheer genius on the author’s part as it allowed readers to get inside the minds of all the participants in the drama. This gave the narrative a wonderfully well-rounded and broad reach. This is an intriguing, captivating, well-plotted tale with the added perspective of allowing us to examine our prejudices as well as actions during this confusing period of lockdown and recovery. A timely and fascinating book that I highly recommend.
