There are a lot of negative vibes in the world – things that challenge our very being, our mental state, and, most importantly, our beliefs. Bad vibes are created by inclement weather, difficult people, bullies, unhappy situations and so much more. These negative vibes may not define us, but they certainly have some impact on molding us into what we are, who we are.

Cindy Christmas’s chapbook collection of poetry, Facts Of Life Poetry, is a blatant, sometimes raw, look at both life and humanity in general. This is a collection of nineteen poems, written free verse and narrative style. Each poem is short as the poet gets right to the point and doesn’t drag the reader through a quagmire of verbiage, making her point clearly and succinctly in as few words as possible. Interestingly, the first letter of every word in each poem is capitalized. I’m not sure of the significance of doing so, but it does highlight each individual word and makes each word equally important. Very poetic. She tackles head-on some difficult concepts, particularly bullying and the question that haunts us all; the meaning of life. There’s even a poem relating weather events to life: “Remember In Life Every Day Won't Always Be Sunny,/ Some Days Will Be Rainy./ For Some, Life Can Be A Pain,/ But Always Make Sure You're Prepared For Life's Hurricane.”

Every aspect of life is evaluated in her simple poetic terms. I wouldn’t call her poems happy, but they are certainly contemplative, making the reader think more deeply into their own lives and their own concerns. However, there are positive messages behind these poems, ones that will lead the reader back to this gem of a poetry collection for further study. An interesting, contemplative read.
