Anne Cormac is the daughter of an Irish barrister and his maid. Her father, William Cormac, leaves his legitimate wife for Anne's mother and moves with them across the ocean. William becomes the owner of a plantation near Charleston. Suddenly, Anne's mother, Mary, dies, leaving the young girl heartbroken. Anne is only fifteen, but she seeks consolation in unusual places. Anne often visits groggeries and spends time with pirates. She falls in love with a pirate named James Bonny and marries him against her father's will. Anne knows how to use a cutlass and dreams of adventures on the high seas. But will the pirates accept a woman as an equal?

Jarrells depicts the well-known historical figure from the first half of the eighteenth century as an ordinary woman who could be our contemporary. Anne has her ups and downs, and she suffers because of her hot temper. Sometimes, she makes the wrong decisions. Anne drastically changes her life, being driven by grief. Her vulnerability and rebellion bring her closer to us. The author adds psychological depth to the narration and thoroughly explores the concept of freedom. Anne is an honest, free-spirited woman always ready to risk her life for her principles. These features make us admire her. Ralph gives interesting historical insights and describes the everyday life of pirates. The author even offers some pirate recipes at the end of the book. We follow Anne's adventures with racing hearts, and her life lessons give us food for thought.
