Fiona Finds What's Fair by Tracey Lyons Tozier is the story of an adorable little puppy named Fiona. Fiona is excited to start sixth grade. However, Principal Hardly is refusing to continue with Fiona's 504 plan that helps with her dyslexia and dysgraphia, much to the chagrin of Fiona's Mama. Mama takes up the issue with Mr. Walkies at the District Office, and both agree on Fiona taking a test with the school psychologist. Meanwhile, Fiona and her best friend Abbie, who has ADHD, need extra help, and the teachers agree to let them take tests in a quiet room that helps with their respective learning disabilities. But when a student in the history class points out it's not fair, Fiona must make everyone understand why being fair means everyone gets what they need.
Author Tracey Lyons Tozier always incorporates relevant social issues into her stories in an entertaining manner that even young readers can engage with and understand. And Fiona Finds What's Fair is no different. This delightful children's story is about two little puppies who suffer from learning disabilities and the challenges they must overcome with the help of supportive parents and teachers. Readers will love these characters. I found the friendship between Fiona and Abbie adorable and was rooting for Mama Bulldog as she fought on behalf of her daughter's education and rights. Illustrator Jenifer Novak's vibrant artwork perfectly complements Tozier's storytelling. The message about fairness and its true meaning is beautifully woven into the story. This picture book will warm the hearts of kids and adults alike.
