In Flowers for Sara by Davina Kotulski, Dani is originally from Seattle. In high school, she falls in love with Michelle, but due to Michelle's parents not being supportive of gay relationships, they cannot be together. Eventually, Michelle gets married, but they still sneak around until Dani finds out Michelle is pregnant. Heartbroken, Dani moves to San Francisco, but she doesn't fully get over Michelle. Dani has a hard time maintaining a relationship and keeping her day job is a problem. Dani is a writer, but this part of her life is also stalled. Veronica, who is her friend in San Francisco, encourages Dani to visit Venice for inspiration. Venice is very beautiful, with a rich culture and history. In Venice, she meets Sara.
Flowers For Sara by Davina Kotulski did not disappoint in regards to strong female characters. I loved the twists and turns in the plotline, and the thought-provoking work got me thinking about various social issues like gay rights and the need for everyone to be equal before the law. It also triggered my curiosity about various historical subjects, like antisemitism and how various minorities have been treated over the years. Dani also mentioned the rounding up of Japanese Americans during the Second World War, something I didn't know about. Davina ensured the characters were well-developed and relatable, making the book an amazing read. I am looking forward to enjoying more works by this author.
Flowers for Sara by Davina Kotulski is an audiobook narrated by the author. Davina did not just read the book; she made it a delight by performing various characters appropriately. She changed her voice and intonations depending on the characters and emotions being described. I loved, in particular, how she captured the Italian accents. It was easy to tell when the scenes changed, and the great vocal performance added to the overall beauty of this wonderful book.
