Although cousins, Richie and Ely Rinko passed for brothers to everyone else. Drafted to fight in Vietnam, the two, among many other soldiers on the battlefield, learn the hard truth about the raging war. They had better chances of going home in a body bag than of leaving Vietnam alive. Richie, the oldest and sensible one, has to fight to keep Ely, the youngest and reckless one, alive amid the onslaught of gunfire and explosions. But the war spared no one. Soon, the pair is airlifted to an army hospital in Yokohama after being wounded in action. Richie meets Mei, a nurse at the hospital, and is instantly smitten. However, one thing stands in the way of his love for Mei, and it involves his cousin. As he is being discharged and sent back home to Montana, Richie has to choose between love and family. Will he be able to live with the choices he makes? Find out in Robert A. G. Erickson’s Forever Lonely.
With an introduction that dropped me in the middle of the war in Vietnam, Erickson weaves an intriguing plot featuring a fascinating cast. The subtle tone harnessed to the storyline hooked me, leaving me turning through page after page. The colorful, evocative cinematic depictions brought the scenes to life on the pages. It felt like I was back in time in the mid-twentieth century, reliving the horror of the Vietnam War deep in the country’s hilly forests. I was swept up in a whirlwind of warfare, gunfire, death, sacrifices, camaraderie, survival, duty, honor, forbidden love, jilted love, fate, and more. The character-driven conversations, which shifted from sharp and tense to light and playful, gave depth to the cast’s conflicts, complex traits, and emotions, allowing me to connect with them. Robert A. G. Erickson’s Forever Lonely is the right pick for fans of military novels blended with high-octane action, drama, adventure, thrills, and more.
