Fortitude: An Autobiography by Karen Black is an account of her roller-coaster life. Her grandparents raised her on their cotton farm in Oklahoma in the 1940s. Karen thrived under Gran and Popa’s love and care, developing an unshakably strong work ethic by helping them pick cotton, feed the animals, drive a tractor, and learn to play poker and dominoes by the age of five. Karen married her high school sweetheart at sixteen, but later ended up as a divorced mother of four children. She forged ahead to support herself and her family through thick and thin. There were many barriers facing women in the 50s and 60s that she had to confront, including the glass ceiling. Karen kept working hard to succeed, with sheer determination and perseverance.

Karen Black shares her tumultuous journey with straightforward candor that engages the reader with every chapter. Her dry wit and sarcastic sense of humor made me laugh out loud many times. I felt as if I got to know her as a person and friend. Karen's fortitude shines brightly with real-life examples, especially her success in chasing and winning over her second husband. I particularly liked reading about her childhood with Gran and Popa and how unrestricted her early life was. I got a glimpse of how simple life could be and I could read a whole book about her time at the farm. Fortitude is an inspiring testament to Karen’s bravery and strength in finding her path. This is an uplifting and compelling autobiography that will have you applauding Karen’s indomitable spirit.
