Foul Play in Franklin by Pamela McCord begins with Erin Bailey inheriting Alice Chapman’s house, money, and cat in Franklin, Tennessee. Upon moving in, Erin suffers a near-fatal fall and discovers her new cat, Peekaboo, can speak. Peekaboo reveals that Alice was murdered, not the victim of an accident as reported, and that Alice’s ghost remains in the house. Together, Erin, Peekaboo, and Alice begin piecing together what happened, using Alice’s journals and observations of neighbors. Erin involves her best friend Susie in the investigation, and they identify possible suspects: Derek Bloom, who abused his wife; Jordan Larson, with a criminal record; and Felice, Alice’s assistant. As break-ins and threats suggest the killer is still watching, Erin realizes she cannot rely on the police and hires a private investigator to help uncover the truth.
Pamela McCord’s Foul Play in Franklin is an absolutely delightful paranormal cozy murder mystery, mixing a lot of small-town charm with an inventive whodunnit. Erin and Susie make a spirited duo, but for me, it is Peekaboo the cat and the ghostly presence of Alice, whose tragic story sparks their sleuthing, that takes the cake. McCord employs angles like clever neighborhood gatherings and the sharp observations of suspects to keep the investigation lively and original. I also enjoy how McCord fills Franklin with memorable neighbors whose quirks and secrets are a source of constant curiosity. The writing is clean, tight, simple, and straightforward. With some great surprises, perfect pacing, and a wonderfully entertaining premise, this is a fantastic first step into the Erin Bailey in Franklin Paranormal Mystery series, and I am looking forward to the next adventure.
