On Easter in 1990, Anselm Ezemson's uncle visited him at school and took him back to his village. Anselm found out that his mother had already been buried in her grave three days before. After his mother's passing, Anselm discovered that her pain and suffering were no longer hers but his own. In Fragments of My Mother's Soul, he tells her story as well as his own. He grew up amid adversity and learned unforgettable lessons along the way. His mother was married off to an older man when she was just thirteen. She lost a child when she was sixteen and gave birth to Anselm at eighteen. However, she had to raise Anselm as a single mother. Throughout his life, faith intervened, and God and his mother's love showed him the way whenever Anselm felt lost.
Fragments of My Mother's Soul is an honest, intimate, and bittersweet memoir in which author Anselm Ezemson honors his mother's memory. Anselm gives an unflinching account of the impact of faith in his life. He constantly refers to biblical passages in this book. Anselm's mother grew up in the shadow of war and had to fend for herself from a young age. Her story shows the power of resilience and faith, as well as the lengths people go to protect their loved ones. Through this memoir, the author explores how trauma and emotional pain can be passed down through generations. As an adult, he found courage and strength by trying to understand his mother through her life after she passed away. I think many readers will resonate with Anselm's story. It's emotionally evocative and universally relatable. I highly recommend it.
