Friends Make Space by Serene Chia is a story about three very different animals--Holly Hamster, Amelia Alpaca, and Chloe Chameleon-- who become friends by learning to understand and respect each other’s needs. One spring afternoon, Holly finds a quiet spot under a tree to calm her nerves. Amelia arrives, looking for a place to rest, and politely asks to join Holly. Although Holly is at first surprised, she agrees, and the two begin to enjoy the peaceful moment together. Chloe, who likes to quietly observe others from a distance, sees them and decides to approach them. The two friends warmly invite her to join them, and Chloe is happy to be included. As they talk and share food, they open up about why they each need quiet spaces. When Chloe invites them to meet again the next day, Holly and Amelia are busy and can’t come. Chloe feels sad and left out. What could Holly and Amelia do to make sure Chloe feels included and for them to be happy? What can they do to keep their friendship special?
