From an Oval is a children's picture book from the Shape Izzy Book Series by Najah. A. Jabbar. Illustrated with drawings from pencil artist DeNeal Fletcher, the book follows Izzy, an imaginative child trying to create a friend to play with on paper. Two ovals give way to the shape of floppy ears. Eager to make it chase a ball, Izzy continues to draw. Only the oval has a mind of its own. It starts chewing the paper instead. When Izzy fastens a leash on it to take it for a walk, the oval starts grazing a path across two pages. No matter how much Izzy wants it to become a dog, the oval continues to act like a sheep. But does it really matter if it becomes his playing buddy?
DeNeal Fletcher's creative illustrations bring a breath of life into the colorful characters of Izzy and the oval. Najah A. Jabbar's short picture book encourages kids to take up paper and pencil and unleash their limitless imagination on the page. Apart from the fun-filled dialogue and the creative premise, From an Oval also teaches a vital moral lesson. Sometimes, things do not go according to plan, but it's important to go with the flow and have fun along the way. Izzy wanted a dog to play with, so he tried bringing him to life on the page. But his imagination had a mind of its own and brought out a playful sheep instead. I think kids will have a wonderful time with From an Oval.
