Michael, Daniel Mendoza's younger brother, has died, and most of his family members are heading to California for the funeral. Some have been estranged for years and aren’t looking forward to the pilgrimage. In each chapter, we meet a different person. Lucia, Michael, and Daniel’s mother, are struggling to deal with grief, which is to be expected. Daniel’s older brother, Jose Luis, is the black sheep of the family and is not interested in attending. Their sister Maria is dealing with her two, three, maybe four-timing husband. Her Prozac-addicted daughter Marie invites Daniel to stay with her so he can avoid her abusive stepfather. Sylvia, the second-youngest of the family, resents how her much older siblings treat her. Tagging along with Daniel is his childhood friend Randy, who hasn’t become much of a sensible adult. What happens when they all reunite? Read From the Streets of Chambers Lane, book one of a series by Daniel Maldonado, to find out.
Readers of Daniel Maldonado’s Daniel Mendoza Thriller series will know the protagonist as a hot-shot lawyer who gets caught up in fascinating cases. Origin stories are always popular—just ask any Marvel or DC fan—so it’s a wonderful experience to read From the Streets of Chambers Lane and get some of Daniel’s backstory and that of numerous family members and friends. The Daniel we meet here is a little more melancholy, with rage simmering under the surface, understandable with the death of his younger brother. Fans of the series will appreciate this insight into his life. However, those who enjoy family sagas can read the Chambers Lane series as a standalone. I’m excited about book two.
