In Fun With A Monster, we are introduced to a little boy who is ending his day and getting ready for bed. He has a nightly ritual: searching his room for anything that might be creepy in the dark. Once he feels satisfied, he climbs into bed, only to be met by a monster with horns in the middle of the night. Terrified, the little boy closes and opens his eyes, trying to get the creature to disappear, but to no avail. Then, he remembers that he has a powerful imagination and starts to think about various scenarios in which he and the monster can have a fun time together, making the rest of the night not so bad. When he wakes up, will the monster still be there waiting for him?
I thought Fun With a Monster was a lovely little story, and Ann Fleming did a wonderful job with it. The illustrations by Stefanie Geyer are beautiful and will definitely help draw the attention of young readers. They also fit perfectly with the storyline. The tale itself is fascinating and unique, and not your typical bedtime story. It’s also very relatable; even as an adult, I have had objects in a dark room appear as something much more sinister than what they were! It shows kids that it’s common for eyes to play tricks on you at times. Fun With a Monster is a nice story to end the day with. I can’t wait to read more of Ann Fleming’s work.
