Funeral Games by Alexander Geiger begins when Alexandros, known to history as Alexander the Great, dies in Babylon with no adult son ready to inherit his empire. Ptolemaios Soter, one of his Macedonian generals, has a secret: he was born in another era, sent into the ancient world, then trapped there for decades. As Perdikkas, the commander holding Alexandros’s signet ring, tries to rule through the dead king’s heirs, Ptolemaios acts to protect Artakama, his Persian wife, from the palace danger around every royal claimant. When Alexandros’s funeral carriage becomes the symbol every army follows, Ptolemaios sees Egypt as his safest refuge. To reach Alexandria, he must outmaneuver rivals who believe the corpse of a conqueror can still decide who rules.

Funeral Games by Alexander Geiger is absorbing historical fiction, and presents Alexandros’s shattered empire with assured imagination. The author's research shows in the details of the fourth century BCE, especially the temple-shaped funeral carriage built for Alexandros’s body as Ptolemaios redirects it to Egypt, where the conqueror is received as a pharaoh god. The period feels authentic, and Geiger’s characters behave according to the era. Ptolemaios, the time traveller, uses Alexandros’s corpse as political proof, while Kynane, a royal Argead mother, pushes Adeia toward kingship through bloodline and marriage. The prose moves quickly, giving the narrative a swift pace, and even though this is the fifth book in The Ptolemaios Saga, it's relatively easy to read. Readers looking for ancient succession history with a time travel angle will love this book.
