Game Play is the story of two hockey players, professional Glaciers defense man Dylan and former USA team member Samantha. He’s looking for a better contract and she’s looking to get out of Minnesota. Before then, they agree to one night filled with nothing but passion. But fate has conspired against them. Dylan tries to drag Samantha back to the life she is trying desperately to leave behind. Even though Dylan really could learn a lot from her, his main motivation is that he feels humiliated after their night together. She marked him up and left him without a look back and that just won’t do. I love the way Lynda Aicher set up this story of hockey and love. It isn’t just some cocky player looking to score. It is two different players at different points in their career, trying desperately to move forward.
Lynda Aicher has created wonderful characters in Dylan and Samantha. The desperation and anger Samantha feels is palpable but not over the top. Despite being born a female and still being one of the best hockey players around, it isn’t enough to give her the career or status she wants. So she’s prepared to leave it all behind until Dylan pulls her right back in. Between grueling sessions on the ice and the steamy sessions off the ice, Dylan and Sam fall in love. But whether or not that love is enough to survive his injury and her loss and resentment remains to be seen. Their struggle to achieve their goals without being apart is heart-wrenching but also incredibly familiar. It brings an added layer to Game Play that could simply be another sports romance.
