Heidi Heisel's Gizmo Goes to Germany follows Gizmo, a lively young dog who attends Service Dog School but keeps getting in trouble for being late and distracted. His teacher, a strict and disciplined German Shepherd named Fritz, finally tells him that he is close to failing the program. However, instead of giving up on him, Fritz offers Gizmo one last chance. Gizmo must travel to Germany with Fritz and complete a special class there. Their trip becomes a mix of schoolwork and cultural lessons. Gizmo visits historic castles, medieval towns, and famous places like Cologne, the Gothic cathedral, and Nuremberg. He learns about German inventions, traditional foods, and important festivals, such as Oktoberfest. Fritz also teaches Gizmo practical lessons about reading instructions, being prepared, taking responsibility, and building discipline. In the end, will Gizmo be ready for his final test?
Gizmo Goes to Germany by Heidi Heisel is a fun, educational, and exciting travel adventure book for children. Heisel's descriptive writing and fascinating character developments did a great job of holding my attention. Gizmo’s struggles are honest and relatable. He isn’t a perfect student. Instead, he's easily distracted, makes excuses, and feels discouraged when he keeps failing. His journey is meaningful because the book treats growth as something authentic, not something that magically happens overnight. Fritz is strict, but he isn’t unkind. His expectations stem from wanting Gizmo to succeed, which made their teacher-student relationship genuine. I'm a passionate fan of all things German; thus, I love how Germany is woven into the story, not just as a backdrop, but as part of Gizmo’s learning. The castles, cathedrals, and cultural traditions all connect to the core messages about perseverance, preparation, and accountability. It made me feel as though the author wants young readers to see discipline as something empowering rather than something oppressive. This incredible children's book will be well-received by young readers and adults alike.
