Augmented Reality by A.R. Milton describes a dystopian world of BioCyber warfare. Headed by twin brothers, an organization had taken over society by means of an AI-driven web, becoming The Eternal Intelligence Entity (E.I.E). Designed to rule the world, it played on human desires, persuading them to become a new hybrid life form as Compatibles, with generous incentives to comply. The human race was captured. The few who were not suitable for upgrading became Incompatibles, outlaws who were hunted and imprisoned. Rules were strictly enforced by Inspectors. One of the unfortunate victims was Alexander (Alex) Umane, who had endured five years of solitary confinement in prison because he was not able to undergo the conversion. Time became meaningless. His world changed when a loud voice from outside the prison triggered a search for its origin. As part of a search party, he was able to escape, joining the ranks of other Incompatibles led by Karina Santos. A plan was hatched to free the world of E.I.E. by using a mysterious mineral known as Axiom that could block further conversions and reverse the process. But plans do not always go according to schedule.
Augmented Reality is a tale of manipulation, advanced robotics, drones, smartphones that predict your every move, and the twin brothers who made a fortune from them. The action alternates between Alex, his escape, and Karina. Emotions are tested as memories resurface after years of suppression. It provides a chilling look at what could go wrong if humanity loses control over its destiny by abdicating it to AI-based systems that have logic, but no soul. At its heart, the book raises questions as to what constitutes being human. It asks whether the human race has the resilience to endure, and if resurrection protocols are built in. The writing style echoes the situation perfectly, with a vivid description of a repressed society that conveys a growing sense of urgency while building tension. The dialogue between the rebels and the E.I.E. entity is particularly imaginative. A.R. Milton has produced an original storyline that will hold the reader’s attention throughout.
