Godson: The Avenging Mafioso by Antonino Rosario Scalabrino is a mafia thriller set against the backdrop of modern New York, a tale that depicts the very nature of the Italian mafia; intrigue, stabbings-in-the-back, and revenge. A mafia lord is killed in the streets of New York and his son, now in England, must decide whether to violate a promise he’d made to his father and himself never to join the band of gangsters or whether to avenge his father’s death. But the choice might not be his to make. From the funeral of his father to his marriage and to his relentless hunt for his father’s murderer, this tale of revenge becomes breathless, punctuated with gory acts of violence, humorous scenes, and unexpected surprises. Readers are introduced to a solid cast of characters, most of them with mafia roots, some rugged in nature like Gino the Driver who plays bodyguard, Mick the Motorman, Fat Freddie “aka” Ratface, and many others.
Godson: The Avenging Mafioso is well-written and Antonino Rosario Scalabrino’s use of humor is brilliant. Some of the descriptions of characters are powerful and allow readers a great image of what the characters look like. Sir William, also known as “Just Call Me Willy,” is described as “a caricature of a typical Englishman,” and there is nothing specific there. But then there are more terrific ones like Angus MacDonald, a man “in his fifties, a conceited, pugnacious short ass,” with a thick Scottish accent. Apart from the great characters, the plot is engaging and there is an unsettling sense of suspense that makes the fingers itch as one flips through the pages, guessing what could happen next. This is an interesting read and a highly recommended one for fans of crime fiction.
