Grass is a young adult fantasy adventure novel by Mark McQuown. Born to two screenwriters from Hollywood, Antonio and Salma, twelve-year-old Cachi always felt hindered by his autism disorder, which prevented him from venturing out of his house. Perched on a rocking chair on his porch, one day Cachi concentrates his mind on moving toward the grass, which transports him into a magical world of insects and bugs. He befriends a Praying Mantis named Meemo, who introduces him to the powerful Queen Myrrh. Upon returning home, Chachi discovers that his illness has disappeared, much to the relief of his parents. He starts writing a screenplay based on his experiences called 'Grass,' which is promptly accepted for a big movie deal. But soon the family realizes that popularity often comes at a price. How will it impact Cachi's life?

Grass is a moving tale about a young boy's struggle with his illness and who uses his vivid imagination to become the boy he always saw in his mind. Mark McQuown's worldbuilding is creative, building a magical world full of extraordinary creatures, featuring talking insects, bugs, and ferocious cats. There seems to be a pointed commentary on the way the media quite often hounds people who become famous, regardless of how it may impact their lives. Cachi is an immensely likable protagonist and readers will find it easy to empathize with him. I enjoyed the book and recommend it to readers who love fantasy adventure stories like Alice in Wonderland.
