Hang Ten with Number Friends by Lacey Moore presents a counting tale that introduces the numbers one through ten in a beach setting. Each number is depicted as a character performing some kind of action. The text is written in rhyme, and the story progresses through moments like “ONE bun having fun in the sun” and “THREE keys skiing in the sea.” As the digits increase, each group engages in a distinct seaside activity that visually represents its quantity. The setting, characters, and actions remain consistent with a beach theme as the narrative moves from one number to the next. It concludes with all the numbers gathered together, reinforcing the whole sequence from one to ten. By the end, this fun learning experience will have children exclaiming which number is their favorite.

I really enjoyed Hang Ten with Number Friends by Lacey Moore because it has an easy, upbeat rhythm that keeps kids engaged without trying too hard. The rhymes feel natural, and the counting moments fit smoothly into the playful nautical theme. As an educator, I can see so many ways to use this book in the classroom. It’s perfect for practicing one-to-one correspondence, number recognition, and even simple prediction skills (“What do you think number FIVE might do?”). You could follow it with counting trays, beach-themed sensory bins, or a class chart where students draw their own number characters. Emma Louise Clarke’s illustrations add so much charm; every page is bright and full of motion, and the number characters have expressive little faces that make the scenes extra fun for young readers. It’s a warm, cheerful story that makes early math playful and inviting.
