Harlow Morgan and the Sky City by Lyndsey Lewellen is a steampunk sci-fi adventure. Readers follow Harlow Morgan in Smokestack City, a world where there are airships, hedge mazes, and hover cycles. But there’s also academy rivalries, family expectations, and secrets. All of these things shape Harlow’s life. She’s eager to prove herself to be just as good as her perfect twin sister, Brier, especially to her watchful father, and to uphold the Morgan name. Soon, a race at Flickerington Academy turns into something much bigger than Sky City and all its secrets. This takes Harlow on a mission, navigating school politics and the arrival of Takashi from Iron Isles. Tension begins to rise, and Harlow is faced with making some difficult choices while also being forced to figure out what really defines who she is. Is it family pride, is it winning, or is it something much deeper? Readers, along with Harlow, will soon find out the truth about Sky City and just how far Harlow is willing to go.

I loved the vivid details and fast-paced writing style, done in such a way as not to overwhelm young readers. Lyndsey Lewellen created a believable sister dynamic between Harlow and Brier. The characters all had flaws, but they were also relatable. They were driven by ambition, but there were also hard lessons that they learned. I enjoyed the world-building and was able to picture it in detail, especially during the academy and racing scenes. It was exciting and dramatic. Lewellen mastered so many elements, from the plot and pacing to the characters and action scenes. Readers who enjoyed similar works like The Storm Runner by J.C. Cervantes would definitely appreciate Harlow Morgan and the Sky City. It’s a strong start to a children’s sci-fi/fantasy series.
