In Harold Heard Butt Cake by B. Z. Humdrum, Harold is a little boy who mishears what other people are saying. At school, classes are frustrating. He hears the teacher say they are supposed to steady the bees and becomes confused over a leaf placed in his hand. Lunch is just as difficult to navigate because Harold is not too fond of having to eat something that sounds so gross. Worse yet, at home, his mother is making a Butt Cake. Harold is sure he doesn’t want to eat it even though it looks so delicious. With Harold’s hearing problem comes an issue with misspeaking. Why does Harold have a hard time hearing? Will he ever be able to get the words right and understand what other people are actually saying?
Harold Heard Butt Cake is a funny story that kids will absolutely love. The words and phrases Harold assumes are completely different make this story highly entertaining. Although hearing problems are no laughing matter, B. Z. Humdrum paints the issue in a light-hearted way that is easy to read and understand. I love the lesson in this story that shows kids how it is just as important to listen to what’s being said as it is to hear the words. The adorable illustrations go well with the story and add another level of entertainment that keeps kids flipping pages. I recommend this story to young children who like fun tales that will have them laughing and teach them something new, especially children who misunderstand due to a hearing problem.
