Haunted Water by Jo A. Hiestand is an atmospheric mystery that draws readers into the enigmatic case of Cameron Rutter's drowning in a Cheshire lake. Ex-detective Michael McLaren finds himself reluctantly investigating the death after locals begin attributing it to supernatural forces, including a mythical 'morgen' and the mysterious Grey Lady. While the police have settled on Gareth Gynne, the nephew of McLaren's old nemesis, as their prime suspect, McLaren's investigation uncovers a complex web of motives involving land disputes, long-held resentments, and possible vengeance. As he delves deeper into the case, McLaren must navigate both the practical aspects of the investigation and the eerie supernatural undertones that persist throughout the village, creating a mystery that blends traditional detective work with folklore and superstition.
Author Jo A. Hiestand weaves together elements of mystery and the supernatural that I found utterly captivating. Her ability to create a moody, atmospheric setting transforms the Cheshire moors and lakes into characters in their own right, building tension through environmental details and local superstitions. As a resident of Cheshire myself, the description was spot-on and the dialogue and attitudes felt authentic throughout. What also impressed me was the author's portrayal of McLaren as a reluctant yet dedicated investigator whose personal conflicts are directly relevant to the central mystery and add so much emotional weight. The way Hiestand balances supernatural elements with practical detective work creates an unusual and engaging narrative that keeps readers guessing until the final revelation. The careful attention to both character development and plot progression ensures that the story remains grounded even as it explores potentially supernatural elements.
The audiobook narration by Callum Hale elevates this already compelling story to new heights. His expressive voice work brings each character to life with a distinct personality, while his masterful control of tone and pacing perfectly captures both the suspenseful moments and the underlying supernatural unease that permeates the story. Overall, Haunted Water is an exceptional mystery that succeeds both on the page and in its audio format, offering readers and listeners a rich, immersive experience that blends classic detective fiction with supernatural elements. I would certainly recommend it.
