Hazel Halts the Humphs by Kirsten L. Henry is a book that offers children a unique approach to dealing with difficult emotions. The story begins by introducing Hazel, who is delighted about going to preschool. She is eager to become the class helper so she can practice leading the class in case she becomes a teacher in the future. However, her teacher, Mrs. Pearl, reminds her that it is not her turn according to the helper’s chart on the wall. This makes Hazel visibly frustrated and disappointed. In an attempt to help Hazel manage her emotions more calmly, Mrs. Pearl encourages her and teaches her a special trick that proves to be very useful.

This book is impactful and thoughtfully designed to meet the cognitive needs of young readers. It contains positive lessons for children, particularly on how they can express themselves more calmly. Personally, as an adult, this story is a reminder of the need to be patient, supportive, and offer encouragement to children when they feel overwhelmed. I commend the author for keeping the story simple with a few well-developed characters so that children are not confused. I also loved the colorful illustrations by Cennet Kapkaç. It makes the story more engaging for kids. The writing is concise, well-paced, straightforward, and easy for kids to comprehend. Themes in this book include patience, self-regulation, self-control, and more. I found this story both entertaining and informative. I recommend Hazel Halts the Humphs by Kirsten L. Henry to all children, parents, teachers, and anyone who enjoys children’s books.
