C.A. Larmer brings readers back to the Murder Mystery Book Club series with its eighth installment, The Mysterious Affair at Styled Magazine. This time, amateur sleuth and journalist Alicia Finlay receives tragic news about her longtime friend and beauty assistant at Styled Magazine, Virginia “Ginny” DeRosso. As she’s trying to process the sudden loss, she receives strange items, such as a copy of Agatha Christie’s The Mysterious Affair at Styles, a statement t-shirt, monopoly money, and a thesaurus. She suspects that Ginny may have left behind a carefully constructed puzzle, and with the help of her book club members, Lynette, Claire, Missy, Perry, Ronnie, and Queenie, she begins piecing together the clues. Before long, Alicia finds that all the clues lead to the fashion magazine, its editorial staff, and something bigger at Arial Publishing. The group follows the trail through office politics, secrets, and hidden motives, while Alicia’s husband, Detective Liam Jackson, and his partner, Indira Singh, pursue the official investigation.
The Mysterious Affair at Styled Magazine is written in a classic blend of whodunit and a recurring ensemble cast. I loved how the plot unfolded with plenty of clues like a traditional murder mystery. The book club members brought lovable and humorous personalities to the investigation. Alicia was curious, determined, and remained the central figure of the story. The pacing was appropriately steady, and I enjoyed how each clue led to more layers of the mystery. I found myself creating my own theories and a list of suspects. C.A. Larmer’s writing was lively, and I loved the playful nods to classic Agatha Christie detective fiction. Readers who enjoyed similar works with clever sleuthing, like Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club, would also enjoy this book.
