Heaven and Hound: Rise of the Alpha (Heaven and Hound series) by LJ Clarkson is a really cute fantasy story for children. The only reason Barny stayed at Five Woods, the snotty rich school his mother scraped enough money to send him to, was because he wanted to draw for LC Comics, the creator of the legendary Silver Strand comic. In fact, Barny had a job lined up with the comic book during his vacation. Although vacation work placement was mandatory to pass the ninth grade, Barny didn't see this so much as work but an opportunity. Until an unfortunate video of Barny facing his biggest fear -- dogs -- goes viral and Barny finds himself blacklisted from the comic book.
In order to pass the ninth grade, he takes a job training cursed hellhounds to track down Mr. Lucius' father. Mr. Lucius has only four weeks to get an audience with his father and explain his side of the misunderstanding with his brother so he can pass the day of judgment. But his sister Gaybreeal cursed the hounds so they were lazy and disobedient. Mr. Lucius needs a miracle and Barny needs to find a different job.
I liked the humor in Heaven and Hound and think other readers, especially children, will appreciate the vivid characters and funny scenes. There is a lot to appreciate in this book. I loved how the story tied together and readers will appreciate how Barny doesn't like dogs but has to work with the world's worst, scariest, meanest dogs. The irony in this book is great!
