Alessa Kelly introduces Cassidy Winter and Sam Kelleher in Her Unbreakable Protector. Cassidy is a divorced 27-year-old bar manager. She met Sam, an ex-Navy Seal, and has since started an unofficial relationship. Sam works with his partner, Mark Connor, for Red Mark. Together, the two men rescue missing children. Sam wants Cassidy to make their relationship official; however, Cassidy is against it. One afternoon, two men kidnap Cassidy and interrogate her about Harvey, her ex. Cassidy doesn’t know where her ex-husband is, so the men threaten to harm her daughter, Grace. Sam is waiting for Cassidy at the bar when a school bus pulls up. Grace enters the bar. She is frantic, as she doesn’t know where her mother is. Sam recognizes her from a picture and immediately steps into action.
Alessa Kelly pens the tension between Cassidy and Sam in minute detail. Both of them are stubborn and are difficult to persuade to alter their decisions. Cassidy is not an average damsel in distress, but her fear of water is a weakness. The abductors are aware of this and use it to their advantage. Sam’s emotions stemming from his past spring up, with Mark as the anchor to prevent his partner from acting without thinking. The transitions from Cassidy’s view to Sam’s view are seamless. I liked the realistic dialogue especially when Sam speaks to a missing child’s father. I even had tears in my eyes when reading how distraught the father was about his daughter. There is plenty of action and the characters are well-developed in vivid detail. I would recommend Her Unbreakable Protector to readers who enjoy slow-burn romances filled with unpredictable outcomes.
