I’m becoming quite a fan of Sandra Brown. Hidden Fires, like many of Ms. Brown’s books, has a delightful love story of two reluctant people with a strong physical attraction to each other. It is her formula and it works. In Hidden Fires we meet Lauren Holbrook who travels to the Texas territory to accept a job offer to be a receptionist. The young, innocent woman travels across the country to escape her pastor who tried to force himself on her and then tried to coerce her into marrying him. When she arrives at what she hopes will be a sanctuary, she discovers not the friendly welcome she anticipated. The Locketts make sure she knows she is not wanted or welcome at the family ranch. Ben has passed away without explaining to Lauren why he invited her to Texas. His plan was for her to marry Jared, who only goes along with the marriage because of a business deal. Both Lauren and Jared discover they are falling in love, but there is much standing in the way of their happiness.
Sandra Brown is a New Times Best Selling author. With each book she sets the standard higher, and yet with each subsequent book she manages to surpass the previous goals. She is a master at developing a feeling of longing in her characters. I loved the way Sandra Brown allowed the suspense to strengthen. This book is filled with suspense, mystery, historical romance, and intrigue. My copy is an audio format. Kevin T. Brown is the talented narrator.
