In Hide and Seek by Jo A. Hiestand, the story unfolds at a party meant to celebrate Jamie Kydd’s long-awaited promotion. His wife, Paula, arranges a mystery game involving a fake crime scene. It should have been a joyous evening, but the party is ruined when a real dead body appears in the garden. To make things worse, the murdered man turns out to be Dan, Paula’s brother. The victim’s past involvement in crime makes Jamie worry that the police would not bother too much about the case. So he turns to his friend Michael McLaren, a former police detective, asking him to help find Dan’s killer. With potential suspects, unknown motives, a kidnapping, and a second murder, the case keeps on getting more complicated. How long will the game of hide and seek continue between McLaren and the murderer?

I have not read a good murder mystery in a while, and it feels great to get back to this genre with Jo A. Hiestand’s wonderful work, Hide and Seek. Despite being over 300 pages, it never gets monotonous at any point. I admit I did not see the twist coming; Jo has done a great job with the plot and its development. McLaren is remarkably humane, which becomes clear right at the beginning when the reason why he quit his job as a police detective comes to light. The book is remarkably clean and therefore suitable for readers as young as twelve. Hide and Seek is highly recommended for fans of detective and murder mystery novels.
