In Honesty Is The New Cool by Jacqueline Crann, with illustrations by Abira Das, Myles is taught what it means to be honest. At first, he believed that making up stories was better than telling the truth until one day his dishonesty was discovered by a campmate. Children will enjoy learning through Myles' journey about why honesty is best. People exaggerate their lives and who they are for various reasons from not wanting to appear boring to wanting to be the center of attention. Through Myles, children will see the challenges that he faced to be liked and to fit in. He saw that dishonesty is never the road to take. Like Myles, some children look for ways to make their lives seem fun, interesting, and important instead of just living and enjoying the moment.

Children will learn, as Myles did, that once you tell a lie, either you must have a creative imagination to keep it up or finally confess. Once the deceit has been revealed, others will see you as untrustworthy, causing you to either lose friends entirely or make it difficult for them to trust you again. Remember the story of The Boy Who Cried Wolf? The shepherd boy’s deception caused him to not only be isolated but when he really needed help no one was around. I loved how Myles’ mother encouraged him, and suggested that he should set the tone to do better moving forward by apologizing and learning the importance of telling the truth, no matter what. As a bonus, children can participate in some fun activities included in the book. Remember always to tell the truth. Add Honesty Is The New Cool by Jacqueline Crann to your children’s library.
