Hop Lola Hop: A Yummy Market Day Adventure by Kathy Urban is a delightful children’s picture book about a little girl named Ella and her stuffed bunny Lola that take market day by storm. As they check off the items they need on their list, they find themselves a little bored. They wander off, leaving the safety of Ella’s mother, and go in search of something special. The story world that Urban has created feels real while still being enchanted, as stuffed bunnies don’t normally move about on their own.
Kathy Urban’s Hop Lola Hop took me back to some of my favorite bunny-focused books. It is always a true treat when an author can transport you back in time to your imaginative childhood. The illustrations created by Siski Kalla have a beautiful wash of light pastels with pops of primary colors that make the pages immediately catch the eye. Little Lola with her flowered floppy ears is the kind of friend that many a child would love to have at their side. The addition of a recipe at the end of the book was something I’d never seen before and it struck a chord. This story will not only take you on a heartwarming escapade full of friendship, but it will also create a physical baking moment with your little one, one that will become a fondly looked-upon memory.
