How Does the Cow Sleep? by Nico Waters is a children's picture book that describes how various animals sleep. This book targets pre-readers (ages one year and above), as well as early readers. In this book, we have a cow, bear, giraffe, lion, bat, rhino, cat, and finally, a baby. Each of the pages reveals the positions that the animals find themselves in when they are in sleep mode. The book asks how that particular animal sleeps, and then answers the question with an illustration. For example, when mentioning the cow, we see the animal lying in a green field, with its eyes closed. Each of the following animals is illustrated in like fashion. The pages are filled with color, drawing the young reader’s eyes to the attractive scenes before them. Enough background detail is provided so that readers get an idea of the animal’s natural habitat.
This book is calming, colorful, and educational at the same time. It shows young readers that we all sleep in some fashion or another. Sleep is natural, and everyone does it. It also provides insights into how some animals are a little different: they may remain standing up or even hang upside-down in their sleeping place. The narrative gives a calming sense of wonder as it describes just a bit about the wonderful world in which we live. Last, we end with the baby, all wrapped up and sleeping peacefully. Again, this sends a message of peace and reassurance that sleeping is natural. Sleeping is good for us all. How Does the Cow Sleep? by Nico Waters will be a nice addition to any home, especially those filled with little ones. Highly recommended.
