Levi Homstad’s How the Husky Got Its Mask is an exciting adventure that traces the bond between Sam and his husky, Sitka, and the adventure they take to the sleeping mountain pass, Mount Orion. It would be dangerous to awaken the snowy mountain, but there was no way to avoid it. Sam and Sitka had eaten the last of their food, and Sam knew there was a frozen lake near Mount Orion that was teaming with fish. It was either risk awakening Mount Orion or risk starving to death. They had to try. Would they make it there and back? Would they manage to find the frozen lake and the fish they needed to survive? And what would happen if Mount Orion awoke?
Levi Homstad’s picture book, How the Husky Got Its Mask, is 'An Alaskan Tall Tale.'The author utilizes his storytelling voice to draw young readers into the adventure that legends are made of. The language is simple, so young readers can easily follow along. The illustrations are subtle and vibrant, allowing the reader to visualize the Alaskan wilderness as well as the two characters in the story, Sam and Sitka. The plot begins with how the two survive year after year, and then it thickens as they endure a winter like no other, running out of food and risking starvation. The story provides a vivid insight into living in the northern wilderness. This legend both educates and entertains.
