Huckleberry Academy, The School of Imagination: Volume 1, The Majestic Feather by J. L. Willis is a majestic children’s book. The story opens with a character hiding in a locker, instantly followed by a flashback to the start of the day. We meet Mo the lion and Bongo the monkey who are starting their first day at Huckleberry Academy. They bump into each other on their way to school and are coincidentally assigned to the same class. There, they meet the rest of their classmates, a host of cute animals, and their teacher, an owl named Professor Oliver. Surprisingly, he introduces the class to magic. He warns them about the importance of understanding how to use the magical majestic feather. Not everyone heeds his instructions.
I enjoyed reading J. L. Willis’ The Majestic Feather. More importantly, I am confident that children will also enjoy reading this work. The characters are intriguing. I related to Bongo, the monkey, who did not want to go to school but still came prepared for weird happenstances that may occur. Mo becoming infatuated with his classmate Roxy the blue rabbit reminded me of similar infatuations I had as a child. The story was well-paced. Bongo and Mo’s relationship grew organically, so I was excited to see them work together when conflict came their way. Moreover, I appreciated Willis highlighting the importance of being brave despite your fears. The encouraging lesson, plus the beautiful illustrations, make me easily inclined to recommend this book to everyone.
