Hudson in Provence is a Paris–Chien adventure by author and illustrator Jackie Clark Mancuso. Travel with a dog named Hudson as he vacations in Provence, an area in the south of France. While on vacation, Hudson reads a book about working dogs so he can be a Provencal dog. Hudson in Provence introduces French words to readers by printing the French word on the illustration. For example, when Hudson goes to the beach at Côte d’Azur, you’ll see the French words - la plage - written on the sand, which means the beach. Children can look for words written on the illustrations, which adds an interactive element and fun to reading the book. I love how the dogs share greetings in French - it is very original. This is an excellent introduction to French conversation.
While in France, Hudson the dog participates in the Tour de France, the famous bicycle race. He learns to paint and ends up with an exhibition of paintings of his new dog and cat friends. Hudson in Provence provides a wonderful introduction to the French language within an imaginative adventure in the south of France. I highly recommend this children’s picture book and think it should be in every library, school, and home. Author Jackie Clark Mancuso has written and illustrated an adventurous, educational book that teachers will enjoy sharing with students and parents will like reading to children. She even includes "le petit dictionnaire" with pronunciations at the back of the book so you can practice words found in the book. Magnifique!
