Humming Bridge is a work of fiction in the crime, suspense, and medical mystery genres, and is the sequel to The Paper Route. Penned by author Jacqueline Cayer Nelson McDonald, in this thrilling novel, protagonist Jackie and her mentor, Detective Dennis Dahm, navigate a world where the extraordinary sensory abilities of Jackie and her Uncle Vic become instrumental in solving crimes. As they confront a suspected serial killer dubbed the Angel of Death, Jackie, now a high schooler working as a Nurse's Aide, must protect patients' lives while racing against time to unravel the mystery behind the sudden deaths plaguing area hospitals.
Author Jacqueline Cayer Nelson McDonald utilizes every drop of suspense and intrigue to craft a riveting reading experience that is sure to immerse readers in the intriguing world of medical mysteries, serial killers, and interpersonal drama. The dynamic between Jackie and Detective Dahm is particularly engaging, with Jackie's insightful observations providing a fresh perspective on crime-solving and the dialogue offering us a lot of exposition and naturalistic storytelling without the need for lots of chunky prose. This helps the pace move swiftly from scene to scene, creating a cinematic feel that’s also enhanced by some fantastically detailed descriptions and atmospheric language that keeps the mood suitably tense throughout. The inclusion of vintage Franco-American recipes in the appendix added a charming touch, enhancing the sense of community and nostalgia within the setting of Lowell, Massachusetts. Overall, Humming Bridge captivated me with its blend of suspenseful storytelling and emotive characters, and I would not hesitate to recommend it to crime fans everywhere for their next read.
