I Am in Charge of Me by Terri Kelley is a poetic, pictorial story book which introduces young readers to the school environment, structure, rules, peers, and teachers while attending the first grade. Children often fear or are unsure about attending a new grade each school year. Terri Kelley puts the minds of young readers, who might be attending the first grade, at ease with her poetic words and vibrant illustrations throughout the entire story.
The author uses rhyming stanzas which help a young reader slowly accept and ease into the idea of first grade because the rhymes are silly and fun. The reader becomes comfortable. The story covers all aspects of the day at a child's school. For example: listening to the teacher, sitting in assigned seats, following directions, following the safety rules, recess rules, lunch room rules, and (of course) learning. The emphasis on following rules shows as a rule chart appears in each picture.
The author also touches on the importance of learning how to share, working together as a team, and creating good friendships to ensure a happy day at school. Those three elements are very important for children to learn and develop skills as they grow and become part of society. The moral of the story is: "Follow the rules, listen to the teacher, share and be kind, and you will not get in trouble and will have a good day."
Terri Kelley has touched base with all of the fears most children often experience before entering into the first grade. This is a great book for parents and teachers alike to read to children and alleviate any anxieties.
