What do a clergyman's dangerous voyage aboard a ship with mysterious human cargo and an ambitious officer's internal battle to rationalize her superior's orders have in common? They are short stories in Carmelo Rafala’s unusual collection. Read along and be enthralled as a soldier finds the willpower to fight the one battle he lacked the courage to face, and watch your hackles rise as a lonely housewife's confessions to a distant husband take a blood-curdlingly dark turn. These and many more of similar ilk await as a uniquely talented author regales us with some of the best storytelling on offer in The Stars Must Wait.

Carmelo Rafala's The Stars Must Wait is a collection of short stories with themes that range from the consequences of infidelity to good old-fashioned vengeance. The anthology is a mix of science fiction and fantasy tales, with a subtle chronological order. Song for the Asking has the feel of a distant era when pirates sailed the high seas. At the same time, the narrative that gives this fascinating collection its title features a mildly dystopian tone with a definitely futuristic feel. Rafala displays diversity in the narrative style from the detail-oriented Clarity of Ice to the deeply emotional delivery in The Roots of Love. The author unfolds extensive origin stories for each character in gradual stages, blending them with dialogue laced with several subtle clues. The product of this approach to storytelling is eight uniquely immersive tales that encourage readers to think outside the box as they appreciate the stories within.
