Jackdaw Affliction by S.G. Hyde is the survival story of a man who battled with illness and trauma. The story follows Billy Cooper, a man with cerebellar ataxia, a rare degenerative illness. Billy lived his life fighting this disease and its effects. It all begins in Fleet, England, where he experiences grief and personal struggles as this disease starts to take over his life. Losing his parents was hard enough, but losing connection with his sister, Becks, broke him. He found solace in Cate, and for some time, things were wonderful. However, they divorced when their relationship could not survive the stress of his disease and the emotional hell he went through every day. As his disease progressed, Billy became more isolated, depressed, and lost himself in the pain until he found a silver lining and the will to live once again!
This is an emotionally charged and relatable story, where the protagonist is painfully real. Billy’s pain was beautifully explained, and S.G. Hyde made sure the reader felt every incident. Living with chronic illness and the psychological effects of it can be incredibly difficult, and the author allowed the reader to experience it all. The narrative style was perfect for the story; the fragmented structure emphasized Billy’s memory problems and gave a personal look inside his mind. His relationship with Matey was a blessing. I loved how Matey helped Billy to open up with love and calm support. That dog brought peace to Billy’s stormy life. Divided into five parts, Jackdaw Affliction has dark humor and explores themes of survival, loss, second chances, and learning to live once again. Many people will find the courage to live their lives to the fullest after reading it, regardless of the hardships they may be facing.
