I Drove My Bed to Grandma’s House by Carolyn Huizinga Mills is the story of a boy named Lex who absolutely does not want to take his afternoon nap. His mother says, “Sleep tight,” but instead of drifting off as she hopes, he begins to wriggle and fidget until finally he comes up with a fun plan: he’ll drive his bed all the way to Grandma’s house! She never makes him take a rest, and she usually gives him cookies. Before long, Lex is steering his bright yellow bed out the door and into the forest with his loyal animal friends like Rabbit, Moose, and Red Fox along for the ride. Their journey becomes a bumpy, silly, and adventurous trip, filled with twists and turns and a few unexpected obstacles. Will he make it to her front door, or will he fall asleep before reaching one of his favorite places?
Reading I Drove My Bed to Grandma’s House by Carolyn Huizinga Mills made me smile. The story is quite imaginative. It’ll instantly pull young readers in with Lex’s crazy idea of driving his bed to his Grandma’s house. As an educator, I think the emphasized words in larger fonts add a fun burst of energy. It’s a clever little trick that keeps kids focused as the plot picks up speed. Jan Dolby’s illustrations are colorful and full of details. The people and animals are expressive and will hold early learners’ attention. Children love visiting their grandparents, so the idea of driving your bed straight to Grandma’s house makes it relatable. I can picture using this book to spark discussions about being creative, problem-solving, and even feelings about naps or home routines in a classroom. It could be extended with activities like drawing, where they’d drive their bed, or a memory of an adventure at Grandma’s house. It’s a warm, funny tale that invites lots of conversation and creativity.
