"I Have a Restaurant," written by Ryan Afromsky and illustrated by Ron Noble, is a great story for young children to read before or after going out to eat! Ryan owns a restaurant and his day is filled with ordering food, having supplies delivered, preparing food, serving people, cleaning up and preparing for the following day's business. Beautiful illustrations go along with the story and both the words and the pictures will encourage further discussion and there are questions included at the end of the story to use with children.
This is an excellent story to teach young children that the food they order and eat at a restaurant does not magically appear and a lot of work goes into preparing the food and the whole restaurant experience. The story is written so that young children will be able to understand it and there are not a lot of words on each page so that their attention is not lost. The illustrations are beautifully done and have so much detail in them. I would use this book to prepare my children to start going out to eat as it discusses the process of preparing the food and also touches upon table manners and eating the meal before getting dessert. The story is also general enough so that it can be geared toward any type of restaurant and expanded upon with children to fit each restaurant experience. Going out to eat at a restaurant is a treat and a teachable moment for children and Afromsky's book is the perfect resource for this experience!
