I Trusted You: A Shocking True Story by Pierre D. Chambers is an honest and heart rending memoir which exposes the life of a child who has gone through abuse that exists at all levels of society. The author shares his story through the eyes of a twelve-year-old and gives it a bit of dramatic feeling in many places, which adds to the appeal of the book. The author has handled the issue in this memoir with finesse, and tells readers how there are healthier ways to deal with homosexuality and pedophile rape experienced by many children behind the walls of the homes where they are living. The memoir also encourages readers to change their mindset as and when required.
It's a disturbing true story that throws light on what can happen inside a church, even with the congregation being unaware of it. The author, being the victim of sexual abuse within the church by a prominent minister of that time, shares his pain and hurt with readers so that many of them can overcome their past or present circumstances. The memoir is powerful and engrossing and gives a wake up call to the church to be more alert to the happenings inside it. I found the memoir painful and moving, mainly because everyone trusts religious institutions and that is the last place anyone would expect to get abused. The group discussion questions at the end of the book are helpful to readers.
